Happy 138th!

Posted on July 1st, 2005

I suppose it’s one of two birthdays that I always celebrate (the other being Jesus’), but I still think it’s a pretty hokey holiday.

Anyhow, I should probably pay tribute to all of the freedoms that we, as Canadians, have in our great country. With (generally speaking) free speech, health care, (reasonably) good education, and beautiful surroundings (among other things), we are very blessed to be where we are.

Nevertheless, I should be very careful to not forget about the problems that exist around us, and the problems that we, as a nation, are not addressing. Within our borders, the abuse of natives, the homelessness, the poor, and the unemployed persist. And even if we can tackle all of that, we need to turn our attention to those in other nations who are not as fortunate as we are. While we should not impose our way of life on them, we should certainly do what we can to respectfully educate them so that they can develop into self-sustaining societies.

I suppose all of those Live 8 concerts tomorrow will be a step in drawing attention to the latter problem. Hopefully it will inspire more than just a passing thought or mild concern… the poor and hungry need so much more than that.
