The Triple Threat

You Know You’re Asian If…

1*. You were/are a good student with very high GPAs
2*. You majored in something practical like engineering, medicine or finance
3. You have more than one college degrees, especially more than one Master’s

40. Your mom drives her Mercedes to Price Club, or Shoppers Food Warehouse regardless how far it is, even if Loblaw’s is next door
41. You always look phone numbers up in the phone book, since calling Directory Assistance costs 50 cents
42. You only make long distance calls after 11pm or during weekends
43. You prefer your shrimp with the heads and legs still attached
44. You never call your parents just to say hi

In Vinum Veritas

I have to write this just so I can look back and remember how amazing things were this week.

On Tuesday, I had the distinct pleasure of dining at JoJo, one of Jean Georges’ restaurants here in the city. Needless to say, I had some very high expectations as Jean Georges’ reputation certainly preceded him. The restaurant is participating in Restaurant Week — a week where many of the city’s best restaurants offer special prix fixe menus — and the temptation to take advantage of this was too high to ignore. So, on a sunny afternoon, we head just a few blocks north of the Bloomberg office and sit down with great anticipation.

The first dish to arrive was a basil ravioli, followed quickly with a warm asparagus dish with mesclun greens and a mustardy sauce. Both were absolutely fantastic. But the best was yet to come: there was a salmon dish (cooked medium rare) and tuna tartar. The salmon. Oh, the salmon. OHH, the SALMON!!! Quite possibly/definitely the best salmon that I have ever, ever had in my entire life. I won’t forget it. It was so moist and tender and… my goodness. I could have died a very happy man on Tuesday.

The dessert was also a taste of opulence; a chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream and a berry cheesecake with raspberry sorbet (I think) were the dishes for which to die. Yeah. They were even better than they sound. Unfortunately, the last thing that came was the cheque, which was slightly inflated due to a bottle of San Pellegrino. They really could have done us a favour and held the bill. Oh well. It was still worth every penny!

I was particularly happy with the sizes of the portions; they were reasonably small so that we didn’t get too full. I couldn’t even imagine the food coma that could have been had the dishes been full entrees. This all left little work for my stomach during the afternoon and, by 6pm, I was quite hungry again.

Enter Italian Wine Merchant. This is a place with Mario Batali (of Food Network fame/notoriety) influence. I was lucky enough to be invited to a wine tasting event put together by Kirkland, a law firm with an office very conveniently close by. (I have been so very lucky to get to know Emily, one of the summer interns there… more about her in a later post.) It was everything I have ever dreamed of, and more. The wines were all fantastic, and the food filled a gaping hole in both my stomach and in my culinary desires; they served a succulent rack of lamb, which I have not had in a very, very long time. Mmm boy.

These all occurred in just one day, and there have been a flurry of events that have really swung my decision about being in New York. As I remarked in a previous post, I was really indecisive about staying here long-term. But where else can I satiate my food snobbery? Ha. Kidding! Well, mostly kidding. In addition to the delicious culinary opportunities, I have (finally) been meeting really good people that I would really like to know more. Not to say that these kinds of people don’t exist in Canada, but all of you guys are spreading out and it’s getting harder to find a place that’s close to you ๐Ÿ™ So please don’t be hurt if you find out that I am, indeed, seriously considering becoming a New Yorker. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ (Did I just say that??)
