Checking In

Posted on October 17th, 2010

If I could sum up the last few weeks of my life in one word, it would have to be “grateful.”

So much has happened recently (trips back home to Canada, trips to Charlotte and Boston, amazing times at church, discovering new friends, new music, among so many other things) and, through and through, I’ve had this overwhelming feeling of thankfulness. That, and feeling very fortunate to be where I am.

A few conversations with friends reminded me of how relatively comfortable and safe the life I lead is. I have the security and stability of a supportive family, incredible friends, a full-time job, good health, good education, and decent housing. After listing these off, I feel really humbled because I know that there are people in the world that yearn to have just one of those things.

Recently, I have been changing my disposition about my possessions. Previously, I used to cherish them, protect them, and generally try to keep them for myself. (Note that I feel that a lot of other people operate in a similar fashion. Note also that, just because a lot of people do it, it doesn’t mean that it’s right.) Now, however, I feel that I am in the process of loosening my grip and being less possessive of my stuff and, surprisingly, this include my money. It is a strangely liberating experience and some of the responses I have received have been really encouraging; for example, I loaned out a bike (essentially to a stranger, through a good friend from church) and that, according to them, had a huge part in making their day yesterday. When I met this stranger for the first time today, she was overflowing with gratitude (indeed, she had hugged me to thank me before she even introduced herself, which I think is a first..) and I think that is great motivation to keep on stretching my generosity.

After what felt like a bit of a stagnant period, I think that I’m starting to feel more of God in my life again. I don’t know what has changed; maybe I’m just listening a little better now. But I’ve been getting promptings to stretch a lot more than just my generosity. I’m still feeling unsettled and maybe this is part of  a new challenge or a new direction. Regardless, it’s nice to take a step back and give thanks for what I have. (It was Canadian Thanksgiving last Monday and I’m a little late in posting this.)

Grateful. Yep, that just about sums it up.
