What Groundhog?

Posted on February 2nd, 2006

I’m still amazed that Groundhog Day is as popular as it is. This morning, I was greeted by one of the folks upstairs with an enthusiastic “Happy Groundhog Day!!” I cracked a smile, but part of it was because it was just so silly.

I was thinking about how these little creatures go about their duty of predicting their future and I think that we, humans, can do our part to manipulate it: we should plant enormous trees around each of the burrows so that, regardless of the conditions, the groundhogs will never see their shadow. That way, we will always have a shorter winter!

Then again, I suppose that we are already doing our part to manipulate the future; regardless of this dumb superstition, the effects of climate change are real. The winters will, inevitably, become shorter and, if what some scientist are saying is true, will eventually disappear. While we could point to the natural evolution of the planet (with ice ages and what have you), I think that we’re doing a freaking good job and hurrying that cycle up.

    Thanks, Sar 🙂

I like your idea of having a bunch of different blogs (although, I must admit that I only read the journal one regularly)…

    See you Sunday!
