Of Software Engineers

Posted on Thursday, May 18th, 2006

This is the work of one of my old classmates. Oh those Softies 🙂

Close Call

Posted on Sunday, May 14th, 2006

I got an e-mail entitled “Grandma” from my dad just now. It heart stopped when I saw the notification. My grandma is almost 90 years old and, understandably so, I was a little bit very nervous.

——————————————————-

Chris and Justin:

I took grandma to the Emergency Service at the York Central Hospital this morning.

The bottom line is — she is OK. She is home and resting comfortably.

The primary problem was high blood pressure and the secondary was hemorrhage. Both are under control.

I’ll give you a detailed update when I see you next. Jean came this morning to help out. It’s been a long day and I am going to bed soon…

Take care.

Dad

——————————————————-

Whew! It’s not good news, but it’s certainly less bad news than I had anticipated! I think I’ll call home tomorrow.

After talking to my mom today, I realized that I am more disconnected to my family than I had thought… for example, my mom didn’t even know that I moved! We chatted for around a half hour so that brought us both somewhat up to speed, but I’m sure there’s a lot more ground to cover yet.

But I’m starting, which is more than what I was willing to say a month ago. It’s about time that I start putting my mind and mouth where my heart is, dang it. I can’t take the risk of missing out on opportunities (and, boy, was this ever a slap in the face).

Round 5

Posted on Sunday, May 14th, 2006

Co-op term number 5. I said to myself that I’m going to go for a big job this time around, and I think that I was a bit overconfident; a lot of jobs at Google, Sun, VMWare, etc. are awfully intensive and, having switched out of Software Engineering, I don’t think I have the necessary coursework to comfortably qualify for them. I suppose that I could just apply and hope for a lucky break, but then I’d have to stumble through an interview. Argh.

For the first round, I think that I’m applying to some 22 jobs. Only one of them in is Canada. All of the rest are scattered across the United States, England, and even Japan! My apologies to those who were hoping for me to kick around Waterloo… I don’t think that’s going to happen anymore.

Some of the jobs are with monstrous companies (AOL, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, NVIDIA, to name a few), which would do my resume a lot of good. (And on that note, I should take this time to encourage a good friend of mine who is working at a big company to push some favourable buttons! :D) It’s been a while since I had a nice heavy name added to my resume and now would be pretty sweet!

I’ll be sure to keep posting as things progress. Catch ya later!
