Technobabble

Posted on April 7th, 2007

It looks like my laptop is on its way out. As I am typing this post, I have four main applications open: Outlook, iTunes, Firefox, and Trillian (by no means an excessive load on a 1-year old computer). When I move my mouse, it often gets skippy and my music is stuttering and bubbling out. I sigh.

Facing the reality of an impending format (probably on Monday), I’m starting to consider some new software. Even though I have been a pretty strong critic of Windows Vista, I am really thinking about installing it. After all, it is pretty, not any more energy intensive than XP, and has a lot of mobility features that would replace manufacturer software that I have to fun. With any new operating system, though, I run the risk of incompatibilities in the form of driver headaches, program updates, or application failures. I sigh.

A similar debate is taking place between Office 2007 and WordPerfect X3. (I run Office 2003 and WordPerfect 11 right now.) The problem of installing newer software is that I’m likely to consume more resources, which will make an often-hot laptop an even-more-often-hot laptop. Then there’s Trillian Astra, which promises to be less intensive. But I’m really happy with my interface right now… dare I rock the boat by signing up for the Alpha test? I sigh.

You should install Vista in a VM and take a snapshot so you won’t have to reformat when it rots 😉
